The three results that matter

On a phone, a local search shows a map and three businesses. If you are not in those three, most people never scroll. It does not matter how good your site is if you are invisible at that moment.

Being absent is worse than ranking low. You are not in the running at all.

The five usual causes

One, the profile is unclaimed or half finished. No hours, no categories, no photos. Google will not put that in front of people.

Two, the wrong primary category. This one detail decides which searches you are eligible for, and plenty of businesses have it set to something too broad.

Three, inconsistent details. Your address or phone number differs across your site, your Facebook page and old directory listings. That inconsistency reads as uncertainty.

Four, no reviews, or none in months. Reviews are the strongest local signal there is, and a slow steady trickle beats a sudden pile.

Five, a site that never mentions Halifax in any meaningful way. Your profile and your site are supposed to confirm each other.

Fix them in that order

Profile first, category second, consistency third. Those three take an afternoon and often move things within weeks. Reviews and site changes work on a longer clock.

What good looks like after

You appear for the searches that describe what you actually do, in the area you actually serve, and the enquiries you get are closer to the work you want. That is the whole point of it.
