Do I Need a Web Designer or a Web Developer?
Most small business sites need design and wording, not custom software. Picking wrong is how the budget disappears.
They are not the same job
A designer works out what the site needs to say, how it should look, and how someone gets in touch. A developer builds functions that do not exist yet. Booking engines tied into stock. Logins. Calculators.
Most companies looking for more clients and sales need the first one. They hire the second because it sounds more serious.
What goes wrong
A developer can build something that works and still persuades nobody. Nobody was paid to think about the words or the order of the page.
The other way round is just as bad. A visual designer on a job that needed real software, and it stalls halfway.
How to tell
Write down what the site has to do. If it is explain, show the work, and get a call or an email, that is design. If it has to calculate, sync, or log people in, you need development in the mix.
Bring that list to a first conversation. It takes five minutes and it stops you paying twice.
