Before the money
Every one of these has cost somebody I have spoken to real money. Ask them all, even if it feels awkward. Anyone decent will be glad you did.
Who owns the site and the domain?
You should. If the domain is registered in the designer name, you are renting your own address. Get it moved before you go live.
Can I edit my own text?
Yes should be the answer, without a training course. Opening hours, prices, a new service. Those are yours to change.
What happens after launch?
Ask exactly what support means, what it costs, and what response time looks like. Vague answers here turn into ignored emails later.
On the work itself
What will you ask me before designing anything?
If the answer is nothing much, they are decorating. You want someone who asks about your enquiries, your best jobs, and your sales process.
How will this site show up for Sheffield searches?
Look for something concrete. Page structure, wording that matches how people actually search, a properly set up Google Business Profile. Not just the word SEO.
How fast will it load on a phone in a bad signal area?
Half your visitors are on a phone, some of them on two bars. Speed is not a technical detail, it is whether they wait.
On the ending
What if I want to leave?
Find out now how you take your site with you. If the answer is complicated, that is your answer.
Ask these nine and you will have filtered out most of the trouble before you spend a penny.
Do I Need a Web Designer or a Web Developer?
The two words get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and picking wrong costs money.
How Long Does It Take to Build a Website?
Realistic timelines, and the one thing that delays nearly every project.
Do I Need a Blog on My Business Website?
Usually not the blog you are imagining. Here is when writing pays and when it just fills a folder.
Want a straight opinion on your own site?
I am in Holmfirth and I work with businesses across Huddersfield, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and Halifax. Book a short call and I will tell you what I would change first, whether you hire me or not.
